Safety Instructor Chris Schlesinger

I'm an instructor for the American Heart Association and American Red Cross, able to certify students in CPR, AED, BLS, Pediatric First Aid and Standard First Aid.  My students have included dentists, nurses, firefighters, teachers, caregivers, people with disabilities, and many parents with busy schedules.

For the past six years I've worked with the San Francisco Police Department in their first aid course for cadets. I also work as an actor and instructor in their cognitive interviewing program.

For many years I've worked as a comedic actor, so I try to bring a fun and light tone to teaching, while always staying on topic.  I believe in hands-on instruction, lots of student questions, and plenty of time practicing safety skills.  At the end of every class, I want my students to leave feeling confident they will know how to respond to a medical emergency.

In Home CPR Testimonials

I have taken many CPR training courses and many of them felt very tedious to me. I was delighted to have Chris as my instructor. His warm demeanor and sense of humor made the hours fly by and made an often dry subject quite fascinating. Chris also had the confidence of someone who not only knows his subject well, but also has many years of teaching experience. He patiently answered everyone's questions and demonstrated all the techniques until he was sure that we all understood his instruction.

After taking Chris' class, I used the safety training I had learned twice in one year. First, my friend fainted on an outing together. I was able to stay calm, maneuver her to a safe position and determined that CPR was not needed. Next, I was able to help a mother after her child fainted. It was a very scary moment for the mother and the bystanders, but my training helped me take charge and direct one person to call 911 and another to get a Life Guard to help us. Then I used my training to determine that she was breathing properly.

I highly recommend Chris as an instructor to anyone who wants to learn CPR and first aid.

Thanks again Chris for a great class. Here is a story for you:

I came home that same evening of the class and had dinner with my 2 kids and my sister in law. We were eating, when my sister in law started choking on a piece of broccoli. I was surprised at how calmly I reacted, immediately went to put my arm under her arms and gave her back a pop. After two pops, the broccoli came flying out and my dog ate it in mid air. She went from panic to laughing within seconds, as did I -- thinking I just took your course just hours before.

Chris was extremely knowledgeable of the material covered and made the concepts easy to grasp. For instance, we covered both the American Heart Association's and the Red Cross' methods and theories on helping a choking victim, and he used his practical experience to explain how those theories play out in practice. It was also refreshing to cover the material in the comfort of our studio, with such a small class (two people!) This allowed Chris to tailor his instruction to our needs, extending time on material that we needed more practice on and reviewing material that we had mastered quickly. His traveling to us also allowed us to ask questions, something he strongly encouraged, and again, his knowledge shone forth in the answers. I would not hesitate to recommend Chris coming out to your site for comprehensive CPR and AED training.

As an independent businesswoman, it was refreshing to work with someone who believes as I do: that punctuality, professionalism, kindness, and good customer relations are worthy goals to achieve. And Chris certainly achieved them. When I first contacted him, I was struck by his kindness and his professionalism. He treated my questions and concerns with aplomb. He called to remind me of our appointment, a much appreciated act, as it shows the attention to detail that I admire. And, finally, while giving the course, he kindly yet thoroughly covered the material, and ensured that I understood it, both in theory and in practice. In short, Chris was a treasure to work with, and I look forward to next year when I can work with him again.

I really enjoyed Chris' CPR training class. It was so fun and instructive. He is so personable, thorough and easily understood. He has a wonderful flexibility about him that makes you feel comfortable when asking questions. And, since I'm a grandma, I'm so glad I received the child and infant CPR training, too. Being able to take the class in a home setting was so relaxing and convenient. I highly recommend Chris' CPR training.

It was a pleasure to have Chris come and teach CPR to our office staff (a chiropractor, a nutritionist and two acupuncturists.) Chris is an excellent teacher, very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. We all learned many very valuable skills and had a lot of fun at the same time!

Teresa Lonsbury

I thoroughly enjoyed the CPR class that Chris presented in my home. It was informative, easy and very convenient. I also had a friend come and take the class with me, which made the price the same as if we took a class at the community center.

I was immediately able to put into practice what I learned the following week when I started to choke. I headed out of the room and remembered what he told me, which was to not go somewhere where no one would know you are in trouble. I stayed in the room and had my husband help me instead of trying to do it all by myself.

Chris has a great personality, gentle yet in charge. I highly recommend taking Chris' in home classes as the personal attention is well worth it. Plus, the course takes half the time it takes with a big group class. The one-on-one attention allowed me to ask questions at the moment they came up for me, and I know that I would not have been able to ask them in a large group setting.

I would use him again for my re-certification needs and highly recommend him for anyone that wants to know what to do in case of an emergency. I feel confident now that I could be of help to someone if need be... especially a loved one. Thank you Chris for being such a good instructor. It's such a great idea to learn this valuable information in the comfort of one's own home.

Yes.  I try to make sure each student gets plenty of one-on-one instruction from me, so classes with more students will run longer.

Will you come to my business to teach a class?

Absolutely! And I encourage it. We can practice safety skills in the working environment you are most likely to use them.

Can you customize a class for me?

Yes, if you do not need a certification class, talk with me about the safety skills you want to learn.

Besides CPR and using an AED, here are additional topics I can teach you to respond to: infant, toddler and child choking using the Heimlich maneuver and back blows, mild or severe bleeding, burns, diabetic emergencies, strokes and heart attacks, anaphylaxis, poisoning, heat and cold related illnesses, bites and stings, sprains and fractures, fainting and seizures.

Can you teach on short notice?

If I'm available, I will teach on very short notice.

Where in the San Francisco Bay Area will you travel to teach classes?

I travel throughout the Bay Area.  Classes roughly 40 miles from Mill Valley (in Marin County) are at my stated prices.  I add a small driving fee for locations further than 40 miles.  Click on the Travel Area tab for a list of where I will teach a class.
